The Communities of Grand County, Colorado:
Hot Sulphur Springs

Grand County, Colorado - Grand County’s county seat, the small town of HotSulphur Springs, has played an important part in the history of the area.

Named for the hot springs that line the canyon along this stretch of the upper Colorado River, the area was first visited by passing Ute and Arapaho hunting parties, who called the area 'Big Medicine.' White trappers and hunters first visited the hot springs in the early 1800s and by the 1860s the area had been settled under the name Warm Springs. In 1864 the town was rechristened with the name we know today, and began attracting visitors soon after. By the turn of the century the town was a popular resort community.

Today, the Hot Sulphur Springs Resort & Spa boasts twenty mineral indoor and outdoor hot pools and private baths as well as a swimming pool in the summer. Standard day spa services include massages, facials and body wraps, along with lodging and a conference center. Also in town, the Grand County Museum provides a detailed look at early Grand County through a vast photo collection, significant artifacts and well-researched histories. The museum enclosure includes the original Grand County Courthouse, one of the earliest school buildings, the 1896 Grand County Jail, and an original 1913 ranger station. The nearby waters of the Colorado, including the stretch through the town’s Pioneer Park, offer easy access to some of the finest fly-fishing in the state.

Accommodations in the area are varied and relatively inexpensive. Several small motels are located along US Highway 40, which serves as the town’s main street. Resort accommodations are available at Hot Sulphur Springs Resort, and the historic Eastin Hotel on the town square offers a variety of special packages. Camping is available in Pioneer Park, as well as other campgrounds in the area. Several B&B inns offer more intimate lodgings, and there are several dude and guest ranches offering their unique brand of Western hospitality.

Hot Sulphur Springs is host to a variety of fun-filled events. In June, nostalgia is in the air at Hot Sulphur Springs Days. This annual event includes pie baking contests, bingo, running race for children, mountain bike race, parade, BBQ dinner and kids games. The annual medicine Water Rendezvous is a must for the history buff. Events include story telling, Native American crafts and trades booths, muslin black powder shooting contest and nightly council fire evening demonstrations. Come winter, outdoor enthusiasts won’t want to miss the Hot Sulphur Springs Defrost Olympics.
