HOT SULPHUR SPRINGS, COLORADO

History: The hot mineral springs for which the town is named were a popular destination for visiting Utes Trappers and hunters first visited the hot springs in the early 1800’s and by the 1860’s the area had been settled under the name Warm Springs. In 1864 the town was rechristened with the name we know today, and began attracting visitors soon after. By the turn of the century the town was a popular resort community, and the town was incorporated as the county seat in 1906.

What to Do: The modern Hot Sulphur Springs Resort and Spa boasts twenty mineral indoor and outdoor hot pools and private baths as well as spa services and a swimming pool. The Grand County Museum includes displays on local history as well as the original Grand County Courthouse, the 1896 Grand County Jail, and an original 1913 ranger station. The nearby waters of the Colorado, including the stretch through the town’s Pioneer Park, offer easy access to some of the finest fly-fishing in the state.

Lodging: Accommodations in the area are varied and relatively inexpensive. Several small motels are located along US Highway 40, which serves as the town’s main street. Resort accommodations are available at the Hot Sulphur Springs Resort and camping is available in Pioneer Park. Several B&B inns offer more intimate lodging options, and there are several dude and guest ranches offering their unique brand of Western hospitality.

Hot Sulphur Days at the Grand County Museum is a family-oriented event includes living history performances, exciting museum tours, and family fun for all ages. 

Fun Fact: 

In 1912, Hot Sulphur Springs hosted Colorado’s first winter sports carnival, featuring the newly-invented sport of ski-jumping.


William Byers, founder and publisher of the Denver Rocky Mountain News, acquired Hot Sulphur Springs in 1864 with dreams of creating an international resort for intellectuals, entrepreneurs and industrialists. The Colorado River canyon to the west of town and a mountain near Fraser are named for him.
