HUNTING AND FISHING
IN GRAND COUNTY, COLORADO

Grand County, Colorado – Grand County, Colorado, is known for its wealth of year-round recreational activities, from skiing to sailing. But the area has another facet that attracts in visitors from around the world: world-class hunting and fishing.

With 1,000 miles of streams, 1,000 acres of high mountain lakes and 11,000 acres of reservoirs, Grand County offers some of the best lake, stream, and ice-fishing in the Rockies. In Rocky Mountain National Park, you’ll find excellent fishing in the secluded alpine lakes and streams that form the headwaters of the Colorado River. Further downstream, several stretches of the Colorado bear the official designations of “Gold Medal Streams” and “Wild Trout Waters” for their excellent flyfishing opportunities. More great flyfishing can be enjoyed along the Fraser River for miles above its confluence with the Colorado, as well as in several larger streams that feed into the Fraser.

The five lakes of the Arapaho National Recreation Area -- Lake Granby, Monarch Lake, Shadow Mountain Reservoir, Meadow Creek Reservoir, and Willow Creek Reservoir – and the neighboring Grand Lake offer outstanding fishing for rainbow, mackinaw, brown, cutthroat, and brook trout as well as kokanee salmon. Williams Fork Reservoir near the town of Parshall is a great place to go after northern pike, kokanee, mackinaw, and some trout. Just outside Kremmling, Wolford Mountain Reservoir is another favorite destination for flatwater fishing. The ice fishing is excellent at Lake Granby, Grand Lake, Shadow Mountain Lake, Wolford Mountain Reservoir, and the Williams Fork Reservoir. If you’re the competitive sort, contests throughout the winter and spring offer lots of fun and some sizeable prizes.

The Grand County area has been a hunting destination since before the arrival of the first European settlers. The Kremmling area has become known as a “sportsman’s paradise” for the excellent goose, antelope, deer and elk hunting. The town’s businesses include wild game processing, taxidermy, and several outfitters.

Local sports and tackle shops in the area are great sources of information, licenses, supplies and equipment. And for a top-of-the-line fishing vacation, most of Grand County’s famous dude ranches offer flyfishing lessons and guided hunting trips.
