Last night and tonight have been perfect to watch the meteor shower…..no clouds, no moon and perfect viewing of the light show!  Stayed up WAY too late but it was all worth it!  Yet another advantage of the dark skies over Grand County.

Hiking the Onahu-Green Mountain Loop

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Went on the 7-mile loop today and we were rewarded with great wildflowers (Red Elephant Heads and Bistort are in full bloom right now) and 4 bull moose.  This is moderate to strenuous hike that starts from the Onahu Trailhead just 3 1/2 miles from the Park entrance.  Elk were boutious in the meadows with lots of the youngsters mixed in with the females. What a perfect day in Grand County!

Picnic at Lost Lake

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Every summer, a trip to Lost Lake is a favorite loop on one of the most scenic (and rough) roads in Grand County.  We started on County Road 4 off of Hwy 34 (the road to Grand Lake) and as we went higher and higher, had spectacular views of Longs Peak, Lake Granby, Sol Vista and Winter Park.  As we got to the top of Stillwater Pass, the road was very rough, but no problem for my Subaru at about 15 miles an hour.  The trailhead for Lost Lake is well marked and the hike in is about a mile with some uphill.  The lake feels very “lost” and serene, with the beautiful blue-green clor so common in high altitude lakes.  We returned going west to Hwy 125 for more scenic views along Sherman and Willow Creeks.  Total distance on the dirt road is about 24 miles.

Ranger Bird Walk at Rocky Mountain National Park

Monday, July 5th, 2010

Went on the 7:30am bird walk at the Park….led by extremely knowledgeable volunteer Rangers Don and Sylvia.  Walked along the meadows at Holzwarth Ranch and saw an incredible variety of nesting birds….plus lots of elk and a big Mama moose with a very newborn baby.  The High Country Birding walks are every Wed. and Sat. at 7:30am through July.

Baby Sheep on the Colorado River Trail

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

Went hiking on the Colorado River Trail on the way to Lulu City in Rocky Mountain National Park and saw 7 baby sheep (along with 6 moms) scampering along steep cliffs and scree piles…..amazing how they seem to be born with perfect balance and no fear! The weather was perfect and temps hit the low 70’s with clear blue sky.  So glad that summer is here at last!

Earth Day celebration in Granby

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Granby had a great festival last weekend in the town park, with live music, ice cream, garden demos, and lots of booths with info on “greening” up everything from the home to the yard to the workplace.  We even got to look over a wood-chip powered car!

Ice is off the lakes!
